Rebuild, recon exchange, used engine, or walk away

What does an engine rebuild cost?

Nobody can tell you honestly, not before the engine is apart. That is not evasion, it is how the job works: the price is set by what the strip-down finds, which machining operations are needed, whether parts still exist for your engine, and how many hours the work takes at your area's labour rate. What we can do is show you exactly what the quote is made of, how a rebuild compares with a recon exchange unit or a used engine, and what to insist on in writing. Then get real quotes from engine builders near you.

The car

The engine code matters more than the model. It is usually on the V5C or stamped on the block.

Engine Rebuild Cost is a free introduction service operated by Ellul Solutions Ltd; we pass your details to engine builders and specialists near you, who quote you directly. We may receive a fee from providers; you pay nothing and are under no obligation. We are not engine builders and nothing here is mechanical advice on your specific vehicle. We deliberately publish no rebuild price ranges: there is no reliable public price data for UK engine rebuilds, and any figure given before your engine is stripped and inspected would be a guess.

What drives an engine rebuild quote, 2026

Last updated

We do not publish an engine rebuild price range, because an honest one cannot be written. A four cylinder petrol engine with a light top-end refresh and a common rail diesel that has run its bearings and filled the oil system with debris are both an engine rebuild, and they are not remotely the same job. What follows is the list of things that set the number, and the exact wording to ask for so that two quotes can be compared.

This is a cost driver table, not a price table. Each row is a factor UK engine builders price against, with the question that makes competing quotes comparable. No prices are given because there is no reliable public price data for UK engine rebuilds and an invented range would set the wrong expectation before your engine has even been opened. What drives an engine rebuild quote, 2026
Cost driverWhy it moves the priceWhat to ask the builder for
Strip and inspectionUntil the engine is apart nobody knows whether it needs a set of bearings or a new crank. Every price given before that point is an estimate, and it can move in either direction. The strip is usually chargeable in its own right.A fixed price to strip, inspect and report, and confirmation of whether it is credited against the rebuild
Machining operationsMachine shop work is where an engine rebuild becomes expensive, and it is priced per operation: reboring and honing, crank regrind and undersize bearings, head skim, valve seat and guide work, pressure testing and crack detection, line boring. Some are routine, some are a decision point about whether the engine is worth saving. The machining operations listed and priced individually, not as one figure
Parts availabilityFor a common modern engine, a gasket set, bearings, pistons and rings are on a shelf. For an older, low-volume or performance engine, oversize pistons may be made to order, or not made at all. Availability sets both price and lead time, and occasionally decides whether the rebuild happens.Which parts are genuine, aftermarket or made to order, and the lead time on the slowest one
Labour hours and the local rateLabour is the real unit of cost. Removing, stripping, measuring, assembling, refitting, refilling and running in an engine is a substantial number of hours, and the hourly rate for the same work differs significantly between regions and between a main dealer, an independent garage and a specialist engine builder. The estimated hours and the hourly rate stated separately, so you can see which one differs between quotes
Removal, refitting and accessSome engines come out in an afternoon. Others need the subframe dropped, the body lifted off, or the gearbox removed first. Transverse installations in tight bays and cars with extensive undertrays cost hours before any work is done on the engine itself.Whether removal and refitting are included in the quote or charged separately
Collateral damageAn engine rarely fails alone. A spun bearing sends debris through the oil system, which can take the turbo, the oil pump and the oil cooler with it. A cambelt failure can mean bent valves and damaged pistons. This work is often discovered mid-job, which is why the strip report matters so much.A written list of what is assumed serviceable, so you know what could still be added
Ancillaries and consumablesA rebuilt engine going back into a car with the original water pump, thermostat, oil cooler, injectors, glow plugs, belts, hoses and fluids is a rebuild waiting to be repeated. Replacing the right ancillaries at the same time costs less than doing it later, but it is real money and it belongs in the quote.Which ancillaries are included, which are recommended, and the price of each
Warranty and running inWhat is covered, for how long and on what conditions, plus any specified running-in oil change or check at a set mileage. Longer cover with fewer exclusions is genuine risk carried by the builder and is priced accordingly. The warranty terms in writing, including the exclusions and any required running-in service
  • Any engine rebuild price given before the engine has been stripped and inspected is an estimate, not a quote: the machining operations that set most of the cost cannot be identified until the components are measured.
  • Labour hours, not parts, are usually the largest single element of a UK engine rebuild, and the hourly rate for identical work varies substantially between regions and between main dealers, independent garages and specialist engine builders.
  • A rebuild competes with three other options on every failed engine: a reconditioned exchange unit, a used engine from a dismantler, and selling the car as it stands. The right choice depends on the car's value, not only on the repair price.

The questions we get

How much does an engine rebuild cost in the UK?

There is no honest single figure, and any number quoted before the engine is stripped is an estimate. The cost is set by which machining operations are needed, whether parts are available for your engine, how many hours removal, assembly and refitting take, and the workshop's hourly rate. Get the engine inspected, then get itemised quotes for your specific engine.

Why will nobody give me a price for an engine rebuild?

Because the price depends on measurements that can only be taken once the engine is apart: bore wear, crank journal sizes, cylinder head flatness and cracks, and how far any debris travelled. A builder can describe the likely scenarios beforehand, but a firm figure needs a strip and inspection first.

Is a reconditioned engine better than a rebuild?

It is a different trade-off rather than a better one. A reconditioned exchange unit gives you a known price, a known lead time and a warranty from the remanufacturer. A rebuild keeps your original engine, which matters on older, rare and performance cars, and can cost less where the damage is contained. Ask one builder to price both.

Is it worth rebuilding the engine or should I scrap the car?

Compare the total cost of getting the car properly back on the road, including recovery, the strip charge, ancillaries and anything else it needs, against what the car is worth in working order. On a common car with no sentimental value, if those numbers are close, selling it as it stands is a perfectly rational answer.

What is the most expensive part of an engine rebuild?

Usually labour, followed by machining. Parts are often the smallest of the three unless something is made to order. That is why quotes should show the hourly rate and the estimated hours separately, and list each machining operation individually rather than as one lump sum.

How long does an engine rebuild take?

The labour is predictable; the waiting is not. Removal, strip and inspection, then machining, then parts, then assembly and refitting. A single made-to-order piston set or an unavailable crank can add weeks. Ask for the expected lead time on the slowest component before committing.

Is this quote service really free?

Yes, free to you and with no obligation to accept any quote. We pass your details only to engine builders and specialists near you, who contact you directly. We may receive a fee from those providers, which is how the service is funded.
